Drain chemicals can be dangerous for you, your family and your home
Most drain chemicals are only moderately effective if your drains are slowly draining. Most stoppages are further down the drain, so these chemicals will never reach the problem. Many chemical drain cleaners also contain acids which can burn your skin, lungs, eyes and destroy your drains and fixtures. Other chemical drain cleaners have oxidizers, like chlorine which will kill germs, burn your skin and eyes, but will not open your drains. The lure of simply pouring something in to your drain to solve the problem is appealing but it can be very dangerous to people, your plumbing system and most likely will not fix the drain problem.
Digestive enzymes are a safe effective way to maintain drain
There are other substances that can help maintain drainage systems and not harm them. Digestive enzymes are a good maintenance alternative. These are enzymes that are effective at eating cellulose and grease (which are some of the biggest drain stoppers). However, these enzymes need to be used properly.
Another type of substance is hair dissolve, which can clear a slow shower or bathroom lavatory drain but can still be hazardous to your health. BE CAREFUL when using these substances – they can produce toxic fumes.
