Roof Leak Water Damage in St. Louis
Stop the leak from damaging your interior.
Emergency Roof Leak & Ceiling Water Damage Repair
A roof leak in St. Louis is rarely just about a missing shingle. Whether it came from a hail storm in Maryland Heights or a fallen tree limb in Ferguson, a roof leak allows water to invade the most vulnerable part of your home: the attic.
The danger of a roof leak is that water travels. It runs along trusses, down plumbing stacks, and pools on top of your ceiling drywall until—CRASH—the ceiling collapses.
At Fast Help, we don’t fix the shingles (we leave that to roofers), but we handle everything that happens under the roof. We stabilize the interior, dry the insulation, and prevent the structural rot that follows a leak.
The Hidden Dangers of Attic Leaks: “I’ll just paint over the stain.”
Please don’t. A brown stain on your ceiling is just the tip of the iceberg. By the time water soaks through the insulation and the drywall to show up as a stain, you likely have gallons of water trapped above your head.
- Wet Insulation: Fiberglass and cellulose insulation act like sponges. Once wet, they lose their R-value (insulating power) and hold moisture against your wooden trusses for weeks, leading to rot.
- Mold Growth: Attics are often hot and humid. Add water, and you have a perfect mold incubator.
- Ceiling Collapse: Drywall is heavy. Wet drywall is extremely heavy. If it gets saturated, it can fall, bringing wet insulation and debris down onto your living room furniture.
Our Restoration Process
1. Tarping & Temporary Protection
If the storm is still raging or the roofer can’t come until tomorrow, we can help arrange emergency tarping to stop the water intrusion immediately. We have roofers we work with that understand the emergency. More often than not, we can get someone out there that day.
2. Content Protection
We move your furniture and valuables out of the “drop zone.” We cover floors and items with heavy plastic to protect them from falling drywall or dripping water.
3. Water Tracing
Using thermal cameras, we trace the water. Did it run down the HVAC chase? Did it soak the wall behind the kitchen cabinets? We find the entire path of the water, not just the wet spot on the ceiling.
4. Attic Extraction
We remove wet insulation. This is a messy job that requires specialized vacuums and safety gear. Removing the wet “sponge” is the only way to save the wood structure underneath.
5. Structural Drying
We direct concentrated heat and airflow into the attic space and wall cavities. Drying an attic is tricky because of the outside temperature; we use specialized equipment designed to work in unconditioned spaces.
Things to Know About Roof Leaks
- Poke a hole in it. If you see your ceiling sagging or bubbling with water, it sounds counter-intuitive, but take a screwdriver and poke a small hole in the center of the bubble (with a bucket underneath!). This releases the water pressure and might save your entire ceiling from collapsing.
- Document the storm. If the leak is from a storm, note the date and time. Insurance covers “wind-driven rain” and storm damage, but they often deny claims if they think it’s just an “old roof wearing out.” Proving it was a specific storm event is key.
- Check the “boots.” The most common source of leaks in St. Louis isn’t the shingles; it’s the rubber “boots” around the plumbing vent pipes. These rot out in the sun after 7-10 years.
- Gutters matter. Sometimes a “roof leak” is actually a clogged gutter sending water backward under the shingles (ice damming). Keep your gutters clean!
